  3. I replay the records, I watch what they 
  4. did: Regent Sable talked to Peter's     
  5. father via a rare direct fiber holo     
  6. link, a secure line. Ran was not        
  7. particularly happy with the call. "It's 
  8. near Christmas," he said. "I've got work
  9. to do. What do you want?"               
  10.  
  11. "How's Seemie?" Regent asked, and Ran,  
  12. as always, was uncertain whether the    
  13. question was intended to be provocative 
  14. and ironic, or was a sincere expression 
  15. of good will.                           
  16.  
  17. He chose not to be surly, though that   
  18. was his inclination. "She's fine,       
  19. Regent. Just fine."                     
  20.  
  21. "And the boy?" Regent went on. "How do  
  22. you find the boy these days?"           
  23.  
  24. Ran hesitated. "I'm not sure what you   
  25. mean. He's all right."                  
  26.  
  27. You can see that Ran was not telling the
  28. whole truth. You can see that, can't    
  29. you?                                    
  30.  
  31. "No... deviations? No peculiarities,    
  32. departures from the Edmod tutorial      
  33. programs? Does he seem overly secretive,
  34. perhaps? You know the sort of thing."   
  35.  
  36. "What do you want from me?" Ran asked   
  37. belligerently; he was losing his        
  38. detachment, he realized that            
  39. immediately. He'd need an extra session 
  40. in the chamber tonight. But damn it all,
  41. Regent Sable was such a sanctimonious   
  42. ass.

  44. "Just be a good father to the boy, Ran. 
  45. That's all." Regent's voice poured oil  
  46. on the troubled water.

  48. It bothered Ran that Regent called Peter
  49. "the boy" all the time. He had          
  50. considered Regent might be Peter's      
  51. father, but for some reason he'd never  
  52. bothered to have the tests done. It     
  53. didn't seem important then.

  55. Now, though, with the call, he wasn't so
  56. sure. Perhaps it was important. Perhaps 
  57. there were things about Peter he didn't 
  58. understand.

  60. He'd have to talk to Seemie about it    
  61. soon.                                   
  62.  
  63. "I changed his Edmod crystal; there were
  64. some particle flaws. He's fine now." Ran
  65. shifted uncomfortably under Regent's    
  66. gaze.

  68. "We're not so sure, Ran. Back here in   
  69. Geneva things look a little different.  
  70. For example, he's been spending time    
  71. somewhere out of contact. Did you know  
  72. that?"

  74. "What... Oh, you mean topside. Yeah, he 
  75. hangs around a pathetic vet named Radix.
  76. HMDS victim. He's harmless, really.     
  77. Jazz, Regent, the man does gardening!"  
  78.  
  79. "No, Ran. That's not what we're         
  80. concerned about. We've been monitoring  
  81. the Park. It's something else. We don't 
  82. know where he goes, but he's taking time
  83. off. He's in the formative era of his   
  84. career prep, Ran. We wouldn't want him  
  85. to go wrong now, would we? And I have a 
  86. special interest in the boy. So keep an 
  87. eye on him. See if you can find out     
  88. where he's going."

  90. "Sure. OK, Regent. I'll watch out for   
  91. him."

  93. After he broke the connection, he       
  94. wondered how much he really intended to 
  95. do as he'd just promised.
